Powhatan, VA – The 2011 Powhatan County Fair will launch the spring carnival season for Virginia’s county fairs in two weeks. It is the 92nd annual event produced by the Powhatan County Fair Association and will be open daily from May 19th to 22nd at 4042 Anderson Highway (Route 60) in Powhatan. Fair hours are 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. on Thursday, 5 p.m. – 12 midnight on Friday; Saturday 11 a.m. – 12 midnight, and 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. General gate admission is $6.
“We are Powhatan’s playground,” says Fair Coordinator Runda Harris, “This year, we are focusing on fun, family, and fitness. All of our programming is designed to inform and educate, as well as entertain. People will have a great time!”
Known for its spectacular assortment of amusement rides, “America's #1 Carnival” - Deggeller Attractions, Inc. - will be providing the midway rides and games. The four-day event will also feature the Miss Powhatan County Fair Queen pageant, the “Your Highness” active seniors contest, and an exciting Mudd Bogg competition held on a mud-filled track to benefit a local charitable cause. Live entertainment will take place nightly showcasing local artists, bands and regional talent under the big tent. WGGM Radio personality, Cavell Phillips will host a showcase of Gospel choirs on Sunday afternoon. A full schedule is available at www.powhatanfair.org.
The Powhatan Cooperative Extension office will host “Extension Day at the Fair” on Saturday, May 21st and judge the Virginia Egg Council’s “Everybody Loves Chocolate” baking contest, in addition to presenting the 3rd Annual Dog Show contest. “We’re focusing on agriculture, animals and arts & crafts,” says Arla Halprin, Family and Consumer Science program associate, “It’s free to enter and exhibit for everyone to see.” Articles to be entered for competitions may be brought to the County Fairgrounds building on Wednesday, May 18th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Thursday, May 19th from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. Exhibits will be displayed throughout the run of the Fair.
Admission is $6 for adults (ages 13 and up), $3 for seniors (ages 55 and up) and $3 for children (ages 4-12). Children age 3 and under will be admitted free. Active military and reserve will also be admitted free with military ID or in uniform. Advanced unlimited ride “wristband” tickets are $8.
