Powhatan
County Fair History
Founded in 1919, the Powhatan County
Fair is one of the oldest fairs in Virginia. According to County Courthouse records, during the
segregated "Jim Crow" era, the property was deeded to trustees
"for the use, benefit and best interest of the Colored People of
Powhatan County, Virginia" - with the assistance of home
extension agent, W.H. Walton.
Through the years, the
Powhatan County Fair has grown into one of the most successful
fairs in the state. Residents of the County still eagerly anticipate
visiting with friends and neighbors at some of the many activities the Fair
has to offer.
Today,
the Fair is managed by the Powhatan County Fair Association. It is a
non-profit, 501(c)3, volunteer-run organization. Membership and
events are open to all citizens.
